Formula 1 racing dynasties
This is a list of F1 drivers that have won 3+ titles, counting their eras from their first win to last:
Michael Schumacher 1994-2004
Lewis Hamilton 2008-2020 (active)
Juan Manuel Fangio 1951-1957
Alain Prost 1985-1993
Sebastien Vettel 2010-2013
Max Verstappen 2021-24 (active)
Jack Brabham (1959-1966)
Jackie Stewart 1969-1973
Niki Lauda 1975-1984
Nelson Piquet 1981-1987
Ayrton Senna 1988-1991
Of active drivers, Fernando Alonso could surprise. He won in 2005 and 2006. A title win would eclipse the eras of Hamilton, Vettel and Verstappen.
Lando Norris is the defending champion which just that one year to his credit.
Using this list, it takes a while to find eras that clash but there are a few
Of these eras, I wanted to highlight which races saw a 1-2 finish.
1981-1984 Piquet vs Lauda
1981 Lauda did not compete but hinted at a comeback to the level.
1982 Lauda, back to F1 actually led a driver’s strike prior to the first race, relating to to sticking with the same teams for the season’s duration. It was settled the day of the season’s first race. No 1-2 finishes this season
1984 Canadian Grand Prix at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal. Piquet wins by 2.6 seconds. Afterward, he suffered a burn to his foot due to mechanical issues that interfered. He would recover in time for the next scheduled raceeat Detroit. Lauda had started in 8th position. Only they and Alain Prost were on the lead lap at finish.
1984 Austrian Grand Prix Lauda wins on home soil at the Österreichring.
Prost vs Piquet:
1985 Italian Grand Prix at Monza Prost wins over Piquet, 1-2
1986 San Marino Grand Prix. Prost wins this battle
1986 Australian Grand Prix, the season finale which did determine the title. Prost won this 1-2 finish as well, just a 4.6 second gap.
Just one duel in 1987, picking up right where 1986 left off, in the first race of the campaign. Brazil Grand Prix was won by Prost ahead of Piquet on his home turf.
1988-1991 Prost vs Senna
In 1988 Senna would win the title with Prost 2nd
There were 10 (TEN!!) races of the 16 where either driver won and finished 2nd. Intense as any rivalry I’ve ever charted.
Here are links to those races:
San Marino
Mexican
Canadian
Detroit
France
Germany
Hungary
Belgium
Japan
Australia
And of all the finishes, the closest one was in Hungary, a margin of .529 separating Senna from Prost and the checkered flag.
1989 saw 4 more 1-2 finishes between them:
Senna wins the San Marino
Senna wins the Monaco Grand Prix
Senna wins the German Grand Prix
Highlights at
Senna wins the Belgium Grand Prix by just 1.6 seconds!
1990 as Prost leaves teammate Senna for Ferrari:
1990 Belgium Grand Prix is won by Senna by 3.5 seconds.
1990 Italian Grand Prix at Monza is also won by Senna
1991 has one duel right at the start of the season, the US Grand Prix on a temporary road course in Phoenix AZ. Senna won the pole and eventually the race.
2010-2013 Vettel vs Hamilton
Both drivers working for the same team, McLaren, first time since another pair, the aforementioned Senna and Prost, also with McLaren, had raced together. Fun fact: Bruno Senna joined the league, and brought back the Senna name to it for the first time in 16 years. Also Michael Schumacher had intended to come back to the level and replace Felipe Massa but was not cleared healthwise to drive.
2010:
European Grand Prix won by Hamilton over Vettel
Hamilton wins the season-closer, the Abu Dhabi
2011 was even more exciting:
Australian Grand Prix won by Vettel
China Grand Prix won by Hamilton
Spanish Grand Prix won by Vettel by .6 seconds, on the Catalunya road course.
Korean Grand Prix won by Vettel
2012
Hamilton defeats Vettel, Circuit of The Americas at the US Grand Prix.
And that’s that!
Sorry about the links to some of the videos. YouTube allowed them at the time I captured them.
Next is the final part of this series, focusing on IndyCar and its earlier roots and eras.
